A fort!

fort with Regency houseWant to buy a fort? This one comes with a regency house too!
TREMATON CASTLE -Very beautiful historical buildings
This very unique and highly historic fort with Regency house is just amazing!
There’s a 13th Century Gatehouse.
There is also a Georgian coach house, stables and workshop, landscaped gardens, greenhouse and Indian influenced swimming pool.

Probably the most amazing house I’ve seen on rightmove – a Grade II Regency house set within Bailey of Norman Castle is certainly unique!

Massive house in Didsbury

Darley Avenue, DidsburySouth Manchester is more expensive than the North, and this massive house in Didsbury is on the market at £1.6M It’s on Darley Avenue and has uninterrupted views of the River Mersey and golf course beyond.
It has four floors and some massive rooms.
The family room is really enormous at 38’08 x 17’06 ! One of the photos of a bedroom I mistook for a lounge as it has a sofa and coffee table in it!

Vineyard and Orchard

vineyard in SomersetThis one caught my eye because of the mention of the vineyard and orchard!
How fab would that be to own your own vineyard!
This is a beautiful early 17th century house for sale. It has 5 bedrooms and is on at a Guide Price of £1,700,000
It’s in Northtown, North Wootton, Shepton Mallet, Somerset. It has just over 31 acres of land with it.
I love the sitting room with the harp and guitars!
The house is called Wootton Vineyard.
It’s a nice house with plenty of land and some great features and sounds idyllic – in the garden there is an original outdoor kitchen with woodburning stove, Courtyards, Kitchen garden and Orchard plus the Vineyard and a Stream. with Summer flowering meadows. It does sound like the place for a perfect life almost like something out of a storybook! The house is grade 2 listed.

From the brochure –
Located in the north east corner of the land there is a woodland accesed by a wooden bridge with a large wooden gazebo seating area with cedar tiled roof, chimney and fireplace. There is a zip wire, rope swings and 40ft pirate ship. Stepping stones to stream.

How heavenly does that sound!
I might be a grown up but I’d LOVE my own pirate ship!
I’m just wondering how Santa will fit this in my Christmas stocking this year!

How big do rooms have to be?

Someone asked a question recently about how small a toilet room can be. They said the door didn’t close when you were in and your elbows were touching either side of the walls.

There’s no room size minimum in building regs that I could find for bathroom size – am prepared to be corrected if you have some info though.

There used to be guidelines on minimum house size from the The Parker Morris Committee drew up an influential 1961 report on housing space standards in public housing in the United Kingdom titled Homes for Today and Tomorrow.
This wiki article also says that most new builds today fail to meet these standards!

This site has a nice graph to illustrate the floor space principals – but the most annoying cat ever!

The Mayor of London report on space standards is worth a look too

Maybe we should have a competition to find the smallest studio appartment in the UK?

Low EPC houses to be banned

“From 2016, any tenant or their representatives asking for their landlord’s consent to make reasonable energy efficiency improvements cannot be refused. From 2018, the rental of the very worst performing properties—those rated F and G—will be banned through a minimum energy efficiency standard.”
Rt Hon Chris Huhne MP, 10 May 2011

How are they going to ban properties?

Pugin Hall

Pugin HallPugin Hall is a really beautiful Grade I listed house built between 1846-47.
It’s an 8 bedroom house in Rampisham, Dorchester, Dorset. It has lots of features still including a Cane and Hamstone chimney piece, hamstone windows, the main staircase, open fireplaces and a set of mid 19th century doors
It has eco friendly Gilles central heating apparently too as part of a full renovation.

Useful DIY gadget

Magnetic wrist strapNot a high tech gadget at all – something very simple – Blackspur Magnetic Wrist Band Strap Holder for Screws and Nails etc
is designed to hold screws and nuts and bolts so you can have both hands free for using the drill or climbing the ladder. For those times when you don’t have an assistant to pass you up screws or nails. Very useful little bit of kit and a real stocking filler price!

Velcro fastening wrist strap is adjustable so suitable for everyone. Perfect for anyone who likes doing DIY and always asks for help when they have both hands full! Will help you be more productive and make less trips up and down the ladder, or get on with things faster. Easier than having screws or nails in a pocket too! You can see how many you’ve got out so you know you’ve got enough to finish the job.
And take a long look at the photo. Is it just me who finds it’s amusing he’s got a plaster on!
Great little gift idea for the keen DIYer.

Lovely unusual wallpapers

abc wallpaperLooking for something a bit different for a feature wall? This lovely wallpaper called Quentin’s ABC is unique and very special. It’s a relaxed but stylish alphabet wallpaper which is in the distinctive script of Quentin Blake. It consists of chalky-white letters and numbers on a black background. Actual pattern repeat of 46cm.
I think this is a lovely paper that would be great in a child’s bedroom as a feature wall.

Belynda Sharples Collection 2Another wonderful selection I really like is the Belynda Sharples Collection
I think these are very pretty, unusual and would look stunning in a country kitchen or lounge! They are pretty drawings including sheep, cows and plants and have a real countryside theme. I’m sure these will be stunning in any room!
