In Narborough, Sarah Beeny meets Jamie and Charlotte who fear their house is sinking.
They recently discovered an alarming slope in the first floor of their Edwardian home and are terrified the property could be tilting to the point of collapse. Not only that, the roof is leaking and black mould is growing on the walls.

I think this is the house.


One of the few new property programs at the moment. Just check out the dates on the other programs to see. Although we know Homes Under the Hammer are visiting a local auction house for their next series.

I watched a few of the first series of these and thought it was quite interesting to see Sarah encourage people to tackle structural problems themselves – although with unseen structural engineeers giving advice of course. For most people the thought of doing major structural work is just too scary and it’d be time to ring the builder.

The main advice I can garner from the first series is “a survey is a good idea…”

Dreamy house in Somerset

pitney half thatched cottageI think this house is lovely. It’s so pretty inside and out. It’s in the village of Pitney in Somerset
It is Grade II listed.
Unusually it appears to be thatched on the front and tiled on the back of the house.

It has beams, inglenook fireplace, an aga, and is very nicely done!

Although most people use one of the main property websites when searching if you are after something in particular it pays to look around and see what other estate agents there are.
As well as perhaps doing a search for “property detail + estate agent” you could also search for estate agents in a particular area. Even if they’re on rightmove it’s worth contacting local agents as they might have useful info on the area and be the first to know of properties coming on to the market.

For instance Rural Scene deals only with rural property with land. This is well worth adding to your list to make contact with!

Agricultural Specialists McCartneys has a really good search option set on their site.

A London only property search for water side propertys at this one – Waterview – really specialised!

Georgian Property –
The place to buy and sell your Georgian house
– this doesn’t have a huge number of properties but if you’re specifically after a georgian home then it’s worth a look.

Barns ETC sells barns, converted and unconverted.

David Burr Estate Agent deals with village and country properties only – all in the South East from what I can see.

The house is in Lee, Ilfracombe, Devon

The whole house is nice though, with an amazing staircase.
Lee Manor was built for the Squire of Lee – Charles Bernard Mervyn
Drake Cutliffe – in 1896 and is stunningly placed amidst trees at the edge of the sea at Lee bay.

Barton style?

Just read a listing that mentions “Barton style range of farm buildings” … What does this mean? A quick search has found nothing useful…

But more indepth has led me to believe it might mean two equal size barns at right angles to each other..
Another reference says “warm cob walls of a Barton in the Culm lands”… Devon New farm buildings
Which then needed me to look up what Culm lands are – which I believe are an area near Exmoor in Devon.

One dictionary reference gives
Barton
1. The demesne lands of a manor; also, the manor itself. [Eng.] –Burton.
2. A farmyard. [Eng.] –Southey.

So I can now imagine barton style range of farmbuildings to mean creating a sort of court yard – but perhaps not a full courtyard… so two sides of one?
