New tv show – How to haggle for a house
How to Haggle for a House
Finance guru George Harrigan-Brown uses all his expertise to try to get the best deal for house hunters
A channel 4 program. Will be interesting to watch – 11am on Monday morning …
Hopefully in contrast to Kirstie and Phil he’ll suggest offering a lot lower.
Wonder if he’ll use the phrase “If you’re not embarrassed by your offer it’s not low enough”…
DIY disaster in your house?
I’ve had an email about a new home makeover show for Channel 5. Their property expert Sian Astley will rescue Britain’s worst DIYers who – either through lack of money, time, experience or just plain folly – are living in barely habitable and often downright dangerous houses. The problem is they are likely to have bitten off far more than they can chew and have no idea how to finish.
You might remember Sian from Property Ladder – and maybe if you’re in the Manchester area you’ll have seen her in the past on Channel M.

Location Location Location last night
It was in Manchester, so I watched with interest to see what areas they were visiting.
Abigail and Kay wanted to live in Didsbury but with only £150,000 they were out of luck! Didsbury is horribly expensive. David and Ashleigh wanted to buy a flat in the middle of Manchester.

Series 14 Episode 17.
Two two girls were shown places in Northenden, Chorlton, and Heaton Norris. They loved the Northenden1950s house partly because it was very (originally) retro and they loved the chocolate coloured bathroom. They loved the style of furniture in the house and would aim to redate rather than update.
They put an offer in and it was accepted. £110k on an asking price of £124,950.
The channel 4 site now shows details of the properties they viewed.
For under £150,000 in Didsbury – at the time of this post – there are 10 properties with three bedrooms or more. This one even has a swimming pool!
The other couple on the show wanted city centre living. They were a relatively new couple who haven’t lived together before, but the bloke has saved up a deposit and was ready to buy. The girl loved the flat in Salford with the cottagey feel – at the Model Lodging House – which to be honest I thought looked like a prison in the foyer area.
They plumped for the Piccadilly Lofts one and put an offer of £208k in which was accepted.
Grand Designs Dance Floor in Basement
Kevin McCloud meets Claire Farrow and Ian Hogarth, who are trying to build a home containing a sauna, spa, dance floor and DJ booth on a small patch of land in London. They have applied for planning permission to include a basement and started work on the construction, but setbacks, including their digger smashing into a neighbour’s wall and the re-emergence of the old river under the building, threaten to prevent them completing the project
This was a great episode. Kevin was almost beaming with glee with his map of London rivers pointing out that a creek does underground just where they were putting their massively deep basement.
Double tanking was needed when they hit the river and they had to pump water out and stop it as best they could. It would worry me somewhat knowing that water was there still!
This was of course after the obligatory planning debacle where they had to argue with neighbours about having the bigger size house on the smaller plot. Massive disruption for neighbours with the size of machinery required to dig the piles and a small bump into a garage.
The house was very modernly retro with a huge gold sofa and light up dance floor.
Home of the Future
In the first episode, the family discover what rest and relaxation will be like, as they road test some of the latest sleep-enabling gadgets, designed to help them fall asleep quicker, stay asleep longer, stop snoring, and monitor the quality of their kip. There are even brainwave-controlled meditation games.
The programme also reveals what a fully automated house is like, with everything from the blinds and the lights to the music and the TV controlled from a ‘smart’ device. And forget about a front door key; the house now has a computer-controlled thumb print door entry system!
For the first time, youngest son Leon gets a space all to himself – a bedroom in the garden – while mum Michele tries out the latest driver-aided cars, which do the difficult job of parallel parking for her, and presenter Chris finds out about the future of driverless cars.
There are also robot lawnmowers that cut the grass by themselves and a mini power station installed in the house to provide electricity for the new technological toys.
Watch again on 4onD

It’s a Sunday night program and is next on Sun 19 February, 7.30pm – but catch up on 4ondemand
There’s a house full of tech gadgets and a real family living in it – the house has BlueGen Fuel-cell CHP!
It says they spent £250,000 fitting the house with gadgets!
Restoration Man
Channel 4 also had Restoration man on last night
You can watch it on 4onD here
George revisits two stubborn romantics with their dreams of converting derelict military towers into unique homes.
Artist Sarah McCombie has owned a Martello tower in Kent since 2004, and ex-army man Barrie Taylor became custodian of a Scottish castle tower in 2005. Previously, neither had gained planning permission, and George visits each project to see if Sarah and Barrie took on board his advice and turned their restoration dreams into a reality.
Last night’s Location Location Location
Location Location Location was on last night. I watched the last 15 minutes of it. That was enough.
The young girl flat hunting had found a flat she liked but it was 65k over her budget at 465k. So phil suggested putting an offer in just under 450k with a view to moving up in price. She doesn’t like this idea. She wants to snap up a bargain. But Phil refuses to phone the estate agent with an offer of less than 445000!
So no offer is made.
I couldn’t believe Phil found details of a flat in the same sort of area to prove to her the flat was worth as much as they were asking. Perhaps he was on the vendors side and not hers! Looking for proof that a lower price is more realistic is what he should have been doing – and if there was none then not showing any would be better!
It’s almost like he wanted her to pay the asking price. I would love to have time to sit down and watch all of the past zillion series of this program and make a chart showing asking price versus what they ended up paying. I don’t think they’re very good negotiators at all!
The other couple – the vicar and his wife (Ian and Peta?) didn’t buy either but that was because their circumstances had changed.
Perhaps they should rename the show “Looking looking looking” …
Where to put the loo?
Where should you put the toilet when renovating a property?

The moment you are waiting for comes at 25minutes in – it’s almost there on this clip.
